WHO WE ARE


Te Puāwai Tapu is an independent kaupapa Māori public health organisation specialising in sexual and reproductive health issues for Māori.

 

Te Puāwai Tapu operates as a charitable trust and was established in 1990 by prominent Māori women, including Dr Irihapeti Ramsden and Dr Papaarangi Reid.

 

Te Puāwai Tapu is governed by an ‘all Māori’ Trust Board, and has an ‘all Māori’ staff.  The organisation is based in Wellington, New Zealand. Funded by the Ministry of Health, local District Health Boards and the Health Research Council of New Zealand, the aim of Te Puāwai Tapu is to improve the sexual and reproductive health of Māori.
