SEXUALITY EDUCATION SERVICES

Te Puāwai Tapu has been developing and delivering sexuality education programmes to Year 9 & Year 10 students (13-15 year olds) in schools and wharekura in the Wellington region with a predominantly Māori roll since 1998.   The sexuality education programmes are delivered by Kaiako Rangatahi using a youth education model, and incorporating different learning styles in an interactive environment.  The programmes are multi-sessional, with most programmes incorporating 10 sessions with the same group.

Given that sexuality is a complex subject incorporating more than just sex, the programmes are facilitated using a framework called the Six Concepts of Sexuality.  To ensure the programmes are relevant for rangatahi, the Kaiako Rangatahi (Sexuality Educators) use a question and answer process to ‘get to where rangatahi are at’.

In 2005, Te Puāwai Tapu is also developing and piloting a sexuality education programme for parents / caregivers and families.  The objective of the pilot is to provide parents / caregivers the information they need to support their tamariki and rangatahi in making well-informed decisions about sex and sexuality.
